When it comes to kids nutrition, parents certainly have the best intentions. But many have busy lifestyles that don’t always allow enough time for grocery shopping, meal planning or cooking. Others may not be aware of the healthiest ingredients or cooking methods and may too often rely on fatty or starchy foods as the basis for meals.
Coupled with the picky eating habits that seem to be so prevalent among kids, it’s no wonder that children are often not eating as well as they should.
Older kids are frequently on the run, which may mean not only a lot of convenience items and fast foods, but erratic mealtimes too. According to Luigi Gratton, M.D., clinical physician at University of California, Los Angeles, there are some tactics that parents can take with their kids to help them eat better.
"Setting a good example is a good first step," says Gratton. "Parents should make every attempt to demonstrate healthy eating habits with their kids, and this includes having regular meal times." He also notes that kids are more likely to eat healthy fruits and vegetables when they take part in food shopping and preparation.
Younger children often have a number of foods that they refuse to eat. Children can be particular not just about how a food tastes, but about temperature and texture too.
Here are a few ways parents can help their active children eat healthier...

It's never too late to increase your Calcium intake. For people in their 40's and 50's increasing Calcium levels helps maintain the bones you have. Herbalife Xtra-Cal offers one of the most concentrated forms of Calcium available in a tablet. It also contains magnesium and Vitamin D for healthier bones and teeth.
Calcium - If your body is not getting enough calcium from diet it will take what it needs from your bones and teeth. Over time this process leads to osteoporosis a crippling disease that can make bones brittle and susceptible to fracture.
Xtra-Cal is one of the most concentrated forms of Calcium in a supplement that there is.
Vitamin C helps your body prevent the overproduction of the stress hormones cortisol and DHEA. Excessive amounts of these hormones cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure, blood clotting, and blood sugar.
Vitamin E acts as your cardiovascular system's housekeeper. It cleans out cell-damaging free radicals and also helps to prevent platelets from clumping together and clogging your blood vessels.
Magnesium is a mineral needed by every cell in your body. About half your body's magnesium is combined with calcium and phosphorus in your bones.
Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium.

There is hope for overweight people. They can take small, achievable steps to improve their health and reach their ideal weight. Overweight refers to an excess of body weight, but not necessarily body fat. Obesity means an excessively high proportion of body fat.
Health professionals use a measurement called body mass index (BMI) to classify an adult's weight as healthy, overweight, or obese. BMI describes body weight relative to height and is correlated with total body fat content in most adults.
To get your approximate BMI, multiply your weight in pounds by 703, then divide the result by your height in inches, and divide that result by your height in inches a second time. A BMI from 18.5 up to 25 is considered in the healthy range, from 25 up to 30 is overweight, and 30 or higher is obese. Generally, the higher a person's BMI, the greater the risk for health problems, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
"We know that physical activity in combination with reduced calorie consumption can lead to the 5 to 10 percent weight loss necessary to achieve remission of the obesity-associated complications," says William Dietz, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity at the CDC. "Even these moderate weight losses can improve blood pressure and help control diabetes and high cholesterol in obese or overweight adults."
To reach your goal safely, plan to lose weight gradually. One-half to two pounds of weight loss a week is usually safe, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2000. This can be achieved by decreasing the calories eaten or increasing the calories used by 250 to 1,000 calories per day, depending on current calorie intake. (Some people with serious health problems due to obesity may lose weight more rapidly.)
