September 2008Back to school - Best Defense
At school the kids get to share all their favorite summer stories with their friends. They also get to share all their germs. No way to avoid that unless you live is a bubble. You can however increase your childs immune system to help protect them before they catch a virus or flu bug.
Here are some herbs and vitamins that can help provide the best defense against cold and flu viruses.
Vitamin C: helps boost your immune system in at least three ways. First, it helps your body fight viruses by increasing your output of interferon, an antiviral protein that you produce when infected by a virus. Second, vitamin C helps you make the antibodies that combat disease-causing invaders before they can infect you. And third, it helps your body to resist disease should bacteria or viruses find their way inside your cells.
Echinacea: is thought to serve as a stimulant to the body's immune system. By activating white blood cells, making it more difficult for foreign bodies to infect cells. Echinacea is one of the most popular herbal remedies for respiratory infections and flu or cold prevention.
Zinc: An essential mineral that is found in every cell in our body. It stimulates the activity of about 100 enzymes, substances that promote biochemical reactions in your body. Among its many functions, zinc helps maintain a healthy immune system.
Schizandra: A fruit known to powerfully increase immune system function. Protects against stress and increases the energy supply to the cells in the whole body, especially the brain. Schizandra is a free radical scavenger and normalizes blood sugar.
Herbal blend: Echinacea Purpurea extract, Echinacea Augustifolia extract, Astragalus, Schizandra and Ginger all support and boost the immune system.
Did You Know - Standardized Echinacea is superior because you are ensured of getting the same potency every time. A consistent amount of this immune system boosting compound in each serving, guaranteed.

Tom Venuto, famous body builder blasts waist belts and body wraps that claim to burn fat. Tom is a certified strength coach (CSCS) and author of "Burn the Fat, Feed The Muscle." Here are some of the things this expert had to say about body wraps and burning fat.
When your body fat decreases, your circumference measurements will usually also decrease, but "fat" loss and "inch" loss are not one in the same. If you don't know how to tell the difference, you could be falling for one of the oldest, most notorious fitness and weight loss scams in the book.
The truth is, body wraps and waist belts do not shrink fat cells or burn body fat - no matter what type of wrap is used: bandages, plastic, foil, vinyl, or rubber, and regardless of what you are wrapped in: herbs, minerals, enzymes, seaweed, clay, or mud. Fat can only be lost with a caloric deficit from a reduction in food intake, an increase in activity or ideally, a combination of both.
Lose Body Fat without diet or exercise in 1 Hour! That claim is totally false and scientifically unsupportable. Again, body wraps cannot burn fat or "shrink fat cells." If fat loss could be achieved with body wraps, it would be very easy to test and prove.
Body composition (body fat) testing (rather than measurements of inches) could be performed before and after the wrap, and the answer ("does it work") would become easily exposed. Since it doesn't work, you won't find any wrap people accepting your challenge to allow you to do independent body composition testing, nor will you find a shred of scientific evidence showing reduction of body fat from wraps.

Both Chondroitin and glucosamine are considered supplements and therefore the manufacture is not regulated. When purchasing these products make sure you purchase from a reputable company and check the label. The quality of the product will vary from one manufacturer to another.
A qualitative assessment of various trials was done by T.E. McAlindon et al. to evaluate the benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin products for osteoarthritis of the knee and/or hip. The studies were randomized, double blind, placebo controlled of four weeks duration. Fifteen studies reached the criteria and were included in the analysis. Conclusions: Trials of glucosamine and chondroitin products for osteoarthritis of the knee and hip showed moderate to higher effects but there were quality issues and possible bias suggesting that benefits were exaggerated. They concluded, however, that some degree of benefits appears probable.
A trial by H. Muller-Fassbender et al. in 1994 compared glucosamine sulfate to ibuprofen in osteoarthritis of the knee. The result showed that glucosamine was as effective as ibuprofen but without the potential serious side effects.
Recent trials confirm the real benefits of Chondroitin and glucosamine, some arthritis patients swear by them. If you are considering taking them, use them for three months before making a decision on their efficacy. They are much safer than NSAIDs and COX2 inhibitors. Read full article...

You can also curb equipment-triggered breakouts by lining your helmet with a layer of soft, washable cotton fabric; it's a great use for those old t-shirts, too. And no matter what the sport, it’s always a good idea to keep your equipment clean and dry when not in use.
Showering, it’s best to shower immediately after a workout. You may want to use a medicated exfoliant cleanser, but always be gentle with your skin. Scrubbing harder isn’t going to make you any cleaner, or make your acne go away, and it may actually irritate existing lesions or promote the development of new ones. If you can't shower right away, you can still curb breakouts by wiping down with medicated pads; keep a few in your gym bag just in case
Make-up, when exercising, wear as little make-up as possible. Even oil-free and non-comedogenic (non pore clogging) cosmetics can clog pores if worn during heavy exercise. When you’re done working out, wash your skin as soon as possible.
Acne and Exercise - For moderate exercise, your best bet is lightweight, loose-fitting cotton, or a lycra-cotton blend. Natural fabrics allow the skin to breathe, and loose garments are less likely to cause friction. If you’re exercising vigorously and working up a good sweat, however, you may want to try some of the new fabrics designed to wick moisture away from your skin. Continue reading article...
