Everytime I went to see my Dad we always had a nice meal together. There would be your typical main dish with 3 or 4 side dishes. One of those sides was always a salad or at least some lettuce. Actually my sister did most of the cooking and she loves to cook. Unfortunately my sister is allergic to many vegetables like green pepper, mushrooms and onions.
I thought this was the reason those salads were always pretty bland. Other side dishes would include fruits and vegetables like beets, potatoes, carrots, peas and celery. Dad even likes rutabagga and squash (which are high in fiber).
So it was quite a shock when Dad developed serious pains in his abdomen. He was rushed to the hospital and had an emergency cholostemy. That is where the colon is evacuated to an external receptacle.
The doctors said this happened because his colon was not eliminating waste as well as it should. That if he had been eating high fiber food this most likely wouldn't have happened.
A while back I noticed Dad was putting on some weight. I attributed that to just plain old age, He's 82 y/o. Gaining weight at that age isn't such a bad thing provided it doesn't get out of hand. Dad has always been fit and trim. So a measely 20 pounds overweight wasn't going to hurt him, or so I thought.
A while back I encouraged my Dad to supplement his diet to make sure he got all the nutrients he needed. But he assured me his diet was sound and he didn't need any vitamins or dietary supplements. "I eat three squares a day," he said. So I left it a that.
Now, my sister is saying that since that time Dad's diet has changed quite a bit. That Dad no longer takes the time to cook food and has resorted to snacking a lot. Even though the proper foods are in the refrigerator he eats mostly junk food. And that most of the vegies and fruit have been getting thrown away.
If you don't know fruits and vegies are typically high in fiber. Now fiber isn't absorbed by the digestive system but is imperative to keeping it clean. And a clean, healthy digestive system is imperative to absobing nutrients. And proper nutrition is imperative to staying healthy.
So if the digestive system gets clogged up two things can happen. One, the colon stops functioning to eliminate waste. Two, you don't absorb the nutrients you need to stay healthy. When you don't absorb enough nutrients your brain tells you that you need to eat more. This is one way that weight gain starts.
It is easy to see that if a digestive system breaks down, it can lead to poor health and weight gain. When your digestive system stops cleaning out fat and waste it starts to stick to your insides. Another benefit of fiber is that it combines with fat and is eliminated along with the rest of the waste.
About a year ago I talked to Dad about supplementing his diet with supplements like Aminogen, Cell Activator and Fiber Powder. I tried to explain that simple old age can degrade the bodies ability to absorb nutrients and eliminate waste.
I explained to Dad that supplementing your diet with proper amino acids, proteins and enzymes can promote health and help prevent complications from old age. That these essential nutrients can be gotten through herbs and supplements.
Here is the list of dietary supplements I informed my Dad about.
